Trial lawyers
In the coming months, we're going to be hearing a lot about trial lawyers and how they are the evilest thing Satan has ever conceived now that Edwards is Kerry's VP pick, mainly because the Republicans, as always, set the debate and their tool media follows along.
As I mentioned before, don't forget that Dick Cheney has no qualms about using them when he's in the hot seat, and neither does Tom DeLay, and, while I don't have links to back them up, I can say that neither does any Republican who ever gets into any sort of trouble.
But, of course, as the staunch defenders of corporations and the rich (notice I left out the middle class), they don't want you, the average person (if you, dear reader, are indeed the "average" person), to hold their defendees accountable if, say, they harmed you or your loved ones with an unsafe product they made on the cheap. If you're never able to work again, or if your child will be wheelchair bound until the day he dies, well, go fuck yourself, as Dick Cheney would say.
The sad thing is that many middle class, average person conservatives will stand up and jeer trial lawyers along with the Republicans in office who will be trashing Edwards and lawyers. This is the equivalent of rooting against yourself, which they will do until their SUV blows up or they contract food poisoning at a fast food restaurant, when they will become liberal at least for the length of a civil suit and seek retribution for the damage done to their selves.
Lawsuits, like anything else, are subject to abuse, and, of course, there have been egregious abuses. Sure, there should perhaps be some reforms to curb abuses and make it more level. But, this is not what conservatives want. Like what they're trying to do our entire social welfare system, they want it completely destroyed. They want you to have no rights for compensation because it will save them money (they won't have to pay money for lawsuits and they can make cheaper products without absolutely no concern for safety).
Just like everything else, Democrats and even some moderate Republicans, call for sane measures to get rid of the extremes and make things more level. But this administration, and its many sycophants in Congress, want their extreme vision to be fulfilled with no compromise and will intimidate any who don't agree 100%.
I think that, if Republicans are so much against trial lawyers, they should swear them off and vow never to use them. They should go to court and defend themselves. Then, when they get the maximum sentence for beating their wives or driving while intoxicated or embezzling pension money or committing securities fraud, we'll hear about how all those damn liberal judges have destroyed the system.
