Krugman on Moore

Hitting the nail on the head. Right on the money. A home run. Krugman's take on Fahrenheit 9/11, as his take is on just about anything, fulfills any of those cliches. I haven't even seen the film and I can say this.

Yeah, the media has failed us. They've propped up this image of the President that just isn't true. He's cozied up with royal elites, for God's sake, and he makes himself out to be like a regular person? I've known this for some time, but much of America is just finding this out, which is a sad indictment of our media. I mean, we already know how often John Kerry goes to church, for fuck's sake. And Bush's bold, decisive leadership? What a fucking sham that is. He ran from state to state on 9/11 while Rudy Giuliani was the acting President. Bush did nothing to calm me that day, and when we finally got a videotaped message from him, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights. But most Americans, even many Democrats, believe the lie about his leadership abilities.

I think the thing that has been lost in America--and I blame the Democrats partially--is the sense that the Republican party, most of all George W. Bush, is not the party of regular, working class America. The Republican party and the conservative media have done its damnedest to cast themselves in that image--quite successfully too. The liberal Democrats, with little objection from themselves, are now seen as out of touch elites, baby killers, terrorist supporters, tax money stealers who want to pilfer your hard-earned money to finance wasteful liberal elite programs. What about conservative Republicans? What is their image? Can the average American say anything about them that is close to the derogatory image of liberals?

This is all bullshit, of course, but perhaps Moore's movie will shine the light in the other direction. If you think about it, it shouldn't take much to show that conservatives are cutting taxes to help the rich only; are building a deficit that will be unpayable by future generations who will eventually be fucked; are fighting a war in Iraq that hasn't made us safer and has ruined our reputation in the world, making it tougher to confront real problems in the future (anyone onboard for North Korea or Iran?); have fucked up the war on terrorism with this same war that was really just a wet dream of a small cabal of neoconservatives when they should've been finishing the job in Afghanistan; and they've torn up the Constitution and made us all terrorist suspects.

There's more, but I think you get the point. Why can't the media do its fucking job instead of Michael Moore having to do it for them?
