Fighting back
It's about goddamn time that Democratic legislators somewhere start fighting back. I mean, with all the Tom Delay-GOP-engineered redistricting bullshit in Texas, not to mention the GOP-engineered recall of California's governor, this is way overdue. Any action on the part of Democrats, with regards to anything at all, has been way overdue.
I think the entire issue of governors' appointing someone to fill a vacated seat is bullshit. It shouldn't be allowed, mainly because of the partisanship involved. A state official is making a decision on a federal position. With the Senate, such a decision can have major implications on who's in control of the entire body. I believe that there should either be a special election or the party of the person who has left should appoint someone to fill the spot.
To get back to California--the Democrats, of course, didn't do what I would've done. When this recall nonsense started, if I were a Democrat with national power and influence, I would've told the GOP straight out, if you do this and succeed, we will do the same to you in every state we can where there's a Republican governor. Also, I would've said, the first chance we get, we're going to recall your governor in California.
My attitude would've been, you fuck us, we'll fuck you. This is what the GOP does everyday. The Democrats are too damn polite to do this and it makes me sick. This is why the other party controls the White House, the Senate, the House, the Supreme Court, and most of the governorships. If they could stop being pussies, maybe, just maybe, they could one of these back.
