Surfacing
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, which is the standard operating procedure around here I know, but that’s not because I’ve lacked for anything to discuss. The baseball season got started and I sort of fixated on that, posting anonymously somewhere else on all things regarding that.
What’s there to talk about? Nobody likes Bush other than the crusty core of the Republican party. No shocker there. The Iraq war continues on, and the Democrats backed down to an unpopular president and an unpopular view back in May. Shame on them. We recently found out that Cheney wields enormous influence in the White House and is basically the president in the shadows. Again, no shocker.
The most recent outrage, though, is obviously Bush’s commutation (pardon, let’s call it) of Scooter Libby’s sentence for perjury. It’s downright sleazy, of course, for many reasons, and no matter how the conservatives and media people try to frame it, it has no similarity to Clinton’s pardons that everyone got up in arms about (everyone meaning conservatives and the sheep media), since his pardons didn’t involve anyone committing crimes for works done on his behalf and then issuing a pardon/commutation which basically saves your own ass. If you need an analogous situation, go to the first Bush’s pardon of the six Iran Contra figures in the last days of his administration.
It’s a brazen act, further divorcing Bush from America, and conservatives everywhere are patting themselves on the back, declaring victory, with even Republican presidential contenders declaring what a great and glorious deed it was. They’re forgetting something though—the 2008 elections. Unless something severely drastic happens, Bush just handed the Democrats the presidency. When you hear Democrats saying, Paris Hilton did more time than Scooter Libby, you know it’s not going to go over well for the other side.
Perhaps Bush, a seemingly walking buffet of psychological complexes, is doing this as penance for stealing the 2000 election and the resulting chaos and destruction that has since transpired. Or maybe it’s just that Bush, more than six years into his presidency, has not grown in the slightest and is still the same petty, vindictive, partisan hack he was before he got elected. Even after 9/11, the Iraq war, and Katrina, and all the sobering death and destruction these things have caused, this president is still a selfish lout that puts his party—and his self—before everything else.
The thing left for America to ponder is, how did we let this guy be president for eight years?
