Random thoughts
--The bankruptcy legislation confirms what we already knew: we are gazelles to the corporations' lions. Now, they've cleared out the brush so we can't hide and put weights around our legs to slow our running. You can hear the lyrics from Neil Young's "Ohio": "Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,/We're finally on our own." This is how our government now fights its own citizens. They assume that we are terrorists/criminals/deadbeats.
My last thought on the bankruptcy legislation is that it is no surprise that it happened. The Republicans control the shots and we all know that they are no friend to the average person and will bend over backwards for corporations. This kind of thing is what we're now stuck with after the recent slew of elections. The surprise is how many Democrats went along with this. In the motion to cut off discussion (where it could've been stopped) and the actual bill vote, many went along with the Republicans. The Joe Bidens and Joe Liebermanns in the Senate are Democrats only in name, because they seem to stand up for corporate interests over the average person when it counts. They're a disgrace. Sure, it may have ended up passing anyway, but if you're hedging your bets and playing some sort of chess game about when to stand on principle and when not to, you're useless. This walking on eggshells routine is what has the Democrats where they are now. I guess, at least, we'll be spared a Joe Biden presidential run, since obviously Delaware--the credit card loan sharking capitol of the world--is more important than the people of this country.
--Democracy is afoot, thanks to our fearless statesman leader George Walker Bush! Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan. Can't you smell it? The Middle East is free! You want results, you say? Well, now, what are you, some sort of terrorist sympathizer? More people turned out in the streets in support of Syria in Beirut? Hezbollah is a terrorist organization? The Egypt thing is superficial? The Shiites and Kurds can't come to a governing agreement, people are still dying on the streets including our soldiers, civil war seems likely? Bin Laden is still loose, heroin production is out of control, Mullah Omar is promising to fight? Hey, you, no peeking behind the curtain!
--GM profit outlook way, way down. What did you do with your tax break? But the economy is in a boom!
--The Senate has effectively voted to allow drilling for oil in the Alaskan wildlife refuge. Congrats to Ted Stevens, Alaskan Republican senator, for getting his way once again, and more kudos to the oil industry who will undoubtedly see their profits soar even further. So long, caribou. Polar bears, make sure you wear your dark coats. Birds--well, there's never been a single instance of birds getting stuck in spill oil, has there? Well, at least, this nation will use this oil to move away from foreign oil dependency. Right? Er, no, not exactly. Again, no peeking behind the curtain!
