The worst fears of the paranoid, loony, tinfoil-hat-wearing left have come true—the Bush administration has made itself a dictatorship. There have been many small things that have led to this impression, but the revelation last week that they have secretly authorized the NSA spying on American citizens has made it a solid fact now. The actual program was bad enough. Their brazen response of, yeah, we did it, we’re justified in doing it, and we’re going to keep on doing it, is the worst thing. It’s asserting that we’re above the law, we decide what the law is, and the rest of you our subject to our whims, and, oh yeah, we’re going to spy on you as we see fit. Let’s stop beating around the bush (a horrible pun, I apologize)—we now officially have a dictatorship, if this is allowed to stand.
Basically, there is a law on the books for spying, and they decided to circumvent it. If they did this, they broke the law. The questions in the media will be, did they or did they not break the law. The questions SHOULD be, why did they have to do this, and who did they do it to. Then, the question should be, what other laws have they violated, and what other laws will they chose to ignore.
How will this play out in the media? The media is stupid, and so are the sheep it plays to. It’ll be the easy answer by Bush—we did this to save your lives!—versus the more complex legal arguments—the executive branch overextended itself and violated a law. Look for the emotional sheep response of rah-rahing around the President, making him out to be some sort of hero, a la Oliver North in 1987, because he broke the law in order to save our lives, the lives of your unborn babies, and your SUVs. The sheep will buy anything, as long as it’s wrapped up in patriotic flag-waving wrapping paper. If you’re suspect of the shit that’s been packaged within, then you’re a traitor. If they can, they’ll ruin your life to make their point.
Until this point, despite the many egregious things Bush has done, I’ve not really called for his impeachment (though it’s probably there in the archives somewhere). Now, though, it’s time for it. What has happened is a clearly worthy of it, quite a Nixonian offense. His administration has no regard for the Constitution and the power limits of the branches of government. It’s time to be impeached.
It’s time for a gut check of everyone in Congress. Where are your loyalties? Is it to Bush and Republican reign in Washington? Is it to your comfy lifestyle and your posh committee seats? Is it to lobbyist money? Is it to your reelection chances or your presidential aspirations? Or is it to the Constitution, the laws of the land, the people that inhabit it?
If they won’t answer these questions to our satisfaction, then we, the people, must vote them out next year and vote in people who will answer yes to the last question and decide to impeach because the law has been broken by the President.
