Blame the Media
Here we go again. It’s the media’s fault that people in the U.S. don’t have a favorable impression of how things are going in Iraq. Never mind all the fucking deaths and carnage that are happening. The news isn’t showing kids dancing in the fields and kneeling before an altar of Bush and Cheney. Once again, when things go bad, it’s time to blame the messenger.
Look, when 30 people get blown up, shot, beheaded, and/or stabbed to death every day, and the attacks came be blamed on terrorism, sectarian strife, and/or insurgency, it’s news. During the Gulf War of 1991, this stuff wasn’t in the news, because it wasn’t happening. I mean, the roses don’t smell so good when there’s fucking dead bodies lying around.
Even in the most war-torn countries, people go about the business of everyday life. This is what makes war so surreal. Bombs and gunfire in the distance, school kids playing tag at recess on the playground. Human beings, eventually, get used to any condition they’re living in. They have to, otherwise they would go mad. Is it newsworthy? Generally, no. Say what you want about the media and what bad news says about people in general, but this is the case.
But then, throw in what the rest of the world has been saying. They say we haven’t come close to seeing the real stuff. The dead bodies, the destroyed lives—things the U.S. media has admitted it’s been holding back.
If things were going great, that would be the news. You wouldn’t have to force it. People are dying by the dozens every day, in horrific ways. We’ve lost 2,300+ soldiers and, according to Bush, our men and women are going to be there until after his term is done. The shit has hit the fan, and we’ve been lied to (with help from the media), and plenty of people said, don’t do this (except for the prominent voices in the media), and they did anyway (with accompanying cheerleading from the media), and it went horribly wrong with complications that will keep popping up years from now (though the media doesn’t dare show any perspective or insight), but the media’s just not showing us the good news. And journalists are risking their lives in Iraq, many losing their lives. Ask Bob Woodruff how sunny things are in Iraq.
All I can say to these incompetent assholes is, fuck off. January 20, 2009, can’t come soon enough. The country and the world are dying an agonizing death right now. It won’t make things magically better, but it’s a start no matter who the next President is.
