From the Vault I: Compassion for Rush (10/10/03)

I'm posting some old posts I like from an old, now-defunct blog of mine and calling it my "From the Vault" series. When you see that in title, either strap yourself in for a trip down political memory lane or run like hell to a blog that is actually timely and not rehashing old shit. So here goes...

From 10/10/03:

There are people calling for liberals to show compassion for Rush Limbaugh who admitted he has a drug addiction. After all, we consider ourselves compassionate, let's stick to that and not play the other side's game. But would cons show compassion if, say, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, James Carville, Paul Krugman, Al Gore, Howard Dean, Tom Daschle, Jesse Jackson, or any other prominent liberal confessed a drug addiction? No, they'd have a field day with it, and in the end, the public would be convinced that all liberals are drug addicts.

I say f*ck the right and have fun with this and call Rush on his hypocrisy. That's right--f*ck Rush and his drug addicted blowhard racist self. Too long liberals have sat and taken abuse from the right (particularly from Rush) without fighting back. The problem is liberals are too compassionate, and conservatives never are. We wring our hands, make excuses for not attacking, while the other side never stops the attack on us. Turn on the tv, the radio, you'll see, day after day, night after night--they NEVER stop. We show mercy. They don't. And they win. Moral victories--which we have many of--are a euphemism for defeats.

If now is not the time to play "gotcha" politics, as some say, when is? It wasn't, apparently, in the recent California recall election either. I'm sure it won't be in 2004 either. When do liberals get their chance to fight back? Or will we just bitch and moan amongst ourselves when conservatives do it, as they surely will, and wonder why we lose yet another election?
